February 8 is a date with a lot going for it.

Actors James Dean, Jack Lemmon and Seth Green, pianist and composer John Williams and Motley Crüe frontman and sometime racing driver Vince Neil all call it their birthday. Mary Queen of Scots was executed on the 8th in 1587. Other notable events include the first colour TV programme broadcast and the foundation of the Stasi in East Germany — so it’s not all fun and games. There’s one more thing though…

Keith & Lou are getting married!

Lou, sister to older brother Ian (aka Danny: don’t ask), was christened Sarah Louise by parents Barbara and Kevin but only ever called “Louise” (awkward buggers). By the age of five she’d moved house three times, from Yorkshire to Lancashire, to Wales and finally to Harrogate.

An early indication of her personality: on holiday in St. Anne’s, two-year-old Lou wants to go paddling in the boating lake, and is (naturally) told “no”. Moments later there’s a splash as she jumps in anyway, forcing a rapid rescue by her flares-wearing dad (‘Baggy Pants’).

St Anne’s stepping stones

Growing up with an older brother meant Lou learned fast. Standing in front of the TV when the football was on earned her her first beating. Defacing a picture of Eddie Gray in Ian's prized “Match Weekly” got her a second beating. There hasn't been a third time. Yet.

Despite early tomboy inclinations, Lou found her element in the 80s, becoming a devoted New Romantic influenced by futurist fashions. On the school’s French exchange she became best buddies with Sue (Poo) Pye, cultivating a “sophisticated” sense of humour (French speakers: conjugate the verb péter) that continues to this day.

Lou’s spirit of adventure led her to an ABTA travel course in Leeds, principally for the free holidays. There she met and befriended Gayle, a lass from from Knaresborough with limited tolerance for cherry pancakes (who can blame her). Despite the … messy … coach journey, Lou and Gayle have remained close.

Ermagahd! ERMAGAHD!

In 1995, Lou moved to London and enrolled at at UNL, ostensibly to further her education but principally because the long holidays would allow her to travel. A year later she was working at a PGL activity centre in the Ardeche. Being a remote spot, the crew there had to find their own entertainment after the school kids went to bed…

By 1999, Lou’s home was a multi-million pound, five-storey mansion in the heart of Chelsea. Sadly this wasn’t the result of her meteoric success (we’d be having a fancier wedding!) but rather a cheap-rent scheme. Lou and her new friend and co-worker Heather were looking after old ladies in exchange for free rent. Heather got the elderly matriarch of the Bulmer Cider empire. Lou got a neurotic former dancer who’d spent WWII in the Bahamas, unsuccessfully trying to pry Prince Edward away from Mrs. Simpson and who made Lou pretend she didn’t actually live in her house.

Dont. Say. A. Word.
What happens if I pull this lever?

Keith is the youngest of four only children born to the four Capstick sisters (there’s a brother too, but he had two sons and so spoiled the “only child” theme). Cousins, three of whom lived within 2 minutes walk of each other (and two of whom lived in the same cul de sac). Sounds like fun, no? Fun fact: Maureen & George (Keith’s parents) have lived in the same house since 1979.

The Fryers

Keith was a typical active kid, riding (and falling off) bikes, playing for multiple football teams, and followed the Geordie tradition of wearing minimal clothing (shorts in winter) as much as possible. Quite how this flipped around to treating jackets and coats as security blankets in later life, no-one is entirely sure. Photographic evidence suggests he was also into dressing up, although he’s prepared to blame the aforementioned cousins if anyone is asking questions.

As fate would have it, one of those football teams (Steamboat) was sponsored by a pub (of the same name) which meant that preteen Keith spent many Sunday afternoons in the pub for after-match events. While the interest in football waned, the fascination with pubs, beer and spirits has not…

Thanks to George, his musical taste progressed rapidly from Status Quo (first concert!) through metal classics like Motorhead, Black Sabbath and Judas Priest (next 3 concerts, all with Dad) to extreme metal and beyond. Whatever your personal taste in music, I think we can all agree that it’s better than the alternative — Maureen’s favourite musician is Sir Cliff Richard (blech).

Almost managed a smile, there...

This naturally led to an interest in all things music and having decided that the organ wasn’t really a very “metal” instrument (symphonic metal didn’t really get going until the late 90s) he switched to guitar. Then to drums. This, coupled with hanging out with pale girls and boys wearing too much eyeliner, led him to adopt the hairstyle he’s still wearing today, 20 years later (and somewhat greyer).

In the mid-90s Keith moved to Leeds (Uni) and, in the first week, met a featherweight Londoner sporting a biker jacket and a curly undercut called Tim, bonding over their shared interest in extreme music, competitive drinking and (eventually) sheepskin coats. Three years later, Tim let slip that he was dating one of his housemates (El) who Keith immediately liked because she had a) a car, b) a mobile phone and c) crazy hair. If you’re at the wedding, ask them how *they* got together…

After five years in Leeds, and the discovery that while Biochemistry might not be so much fun, there were possiblities in this multimedia lark, a fortuitous series of events and contacts put him in London, in the west end, near Marble Arch, just in time…

In January 2001, Lou joined the Marble Arch-based Spencer Stuart where Keith was already working. She was asked to perch at the edge of his big, covered-in-paper-and-gadgets desk area until her own spot was ready. That’s when the sparks and fireworks all started (“Did you move my laminator?” “Where’s my graphics tablet?” etc) but it took end of year drinks and a trip to a casino before the “fire” caught. A whole two weeks later.

Anyone for a drink

Their shared passion for inebriation sophisticated drinking led to early experiments with Belgian fruit beers (for breakfast — well, they’re fruity, it’s like orange juice, no?) and a series of holidays entirely themed around booze. Destinations included

Keith first met Lou’s parents when they were visiting London only a few weeks after they first got together. Lou’s parents were a little nonplussed when, having arranged a Thai meal after work in Waterloo, Lou arrived late, slightly drunk, and with a new boyfriend in tow whom they knew nothing about.

To return the favour, Lou first met Keith’s parents at cousin’s Lindsey’s wedding, where she also met every other member of Keith’s family at the same time. Nice.

Fair exchange

Let it not be said that Keith and Lou haven’t been a good influence on each other.

When they’d been dating for 18 months, Lou thought it would be nice for both sets of parents to meet each other, and arranged a Sunday lunch out at a pub near Richmond, North Yorkshire (the approximate mid-point between Knaresborough and South Shields). Seemingly the parents had been “expecting a big announcement”, and seemed were a bit let down. Many repetitions of “no, just a nice Sunday lunch together… no engagement … no wedding” followed.

As did an absence of any further Taylor/Fryer Sunday lunch outings. Or any big announcements for that matter…

aka “theanorak” and “lardbutty”

Yes, they’re a pair of nerds:

Ups and downs

As with all relationships there have been ups and downs. Quite a lot in fact, as Lou and Keith learned to snowboard together in Slovenia in 2003 (where they fell down a lot), and have ridden in various mountain ranges across Europe and America since.

Lou’s love of travel has rubbed off on Keith, with other highlights including a 2,000 mile road-trip in SW USA and in 2013 a ‘holiday of a lifetime’ trip to Tanzania (photos), meeting up with Heather for a holiday that included a four-day safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, spotting the big five and much more besides. You could probably think of this as an early honeymoon…

Thank you!

Thank you

If you made it this far down you’re either related to us, retired or you’ve got something really dull to finish at work and you’re procrastinating. Either way, thanks for reading.

Our wedding is deliberately small as we have no desire for a Glastonbury-sized affair. That said, if we had gone for the festival-scale wedding, you’d probably have had not just an invite but passes to the VIP bar and a tent pitch comfortably far away from the toilets too.

As you made to the end, you might enjoy browsing this photo montage of us and our wedding guests — just for giggles.

For the guests

Wedding timetable

2.30pm: Arrive at Wandsworth Register Office (one of the best wedding venues in the UK)
2.45pm: Wedding service begins in Victoria Room
3.00pm: Service complete. Photos in the room
3.15pm: More photos on staircase and in garden, weather permitting
3.30pm: Off to the pub (yay!) by taxi.

6.15pm: Taxis to restaurant
6.30pm: Food time — wedding banquet at Nancy Lam’s Enak Enak
8.30ish: More pub (theoretically optional)

In the pub

It's our kind of pub

There’ll be some fizz on arrival for toasts and the like. After that you can and should take advantage of the amazing selection of beers, spirits and wines that The Craft Beer Company typically stock. All to go on our bar tab of course (we'll give you the details there).

What’s for dinner?

Prawnography
All the satays
Squid sambal
Cashew nut mee

There’s allocated seating, but otherwise it’s pretty informal for a wedding banquet. The feast includes a selection of starters, followed by a selection of mains (details below). Being an Asian restaurant, Enak Enak doesn’t really do puddings but there are a couple of items on the menu to order if you’d like. We’ll be serving cake as pudding instead. There’ll be as much wine as we need on the table, but if you’d rather have something else feel free to order away (but no bottles of voddy, Sue).

Starters

Chicken Satay
Beef Satay
BBQ Prawns
Vegetables in Batter (V)

Mains

Assam Chicken
Beef Rendang
Sizzling Lamb
Deep Fried Squid (Sambal)
Pak Choi
Celebration Mee
Thai Green Vegetable Curry (V)
Cashew Nut Fried Mee (V)
Gado Gado (V)
Plain Jasmine Rice
Coconut Rice

After dinner

Well, there’ll be more drinking for those interested, but where we go is TBD as the most convenient nice location couldn’t take our booking. In case there’s any doubt: it may be Saturday night but there'll be no jazz.
